About SYA

The Shropshire Youth Association (SYA) has a rich history dating back to its foundation in 1987. Originally established to support the voluntary youth sector in Shropshire, the organisation focused on providing infrastructure support to independent voluntary youth groups, their leaders, and management committees. Over time, SYA has evolved significantly to meet the changing needs of young people in the region.

In 2013, the SYA faced a pivotal moment when it became an independent charity, separating from local council support. This transition required the organisation to restructure, recruit a new team, and develop new income streams to sustain its activities. Despite these challenges, SYA adapted by expanding its services, including offering direct support to youth clubs, providing alternative education programs, and addressing mental health concerns among young people. The organisation also played a significant role during the COVID-19 pandemic, pioneering virtual youth clubs to maintain engagement with young people.

Today, SYA continues to grow and adapt. It recently move into a new £1.5 million headquarters, reflecting its ongoing commitment to supporting young people in Shropshire. The charity remains focused on its mission to empower young people through various programs and activities, ensuring that they have access to safe, supportive environments where they can thrive.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support and empower young people across Shropshire by providing opportunities for personal development, education, and community engagement. The organisation focuses on helping young people develop their physical, mental, and social capacities through various leisure activities, educational programs, and support services.

SYA aims to create safe, supportive environments where young people can grow to full maturity as individuals and active members of society. Additionally, SYA provides infrastructure support to voluntary youth groups and helps to ensure that youth services in Shropshire are accessible and effective.
